NUJ Enugu council urges FG to expedite action on collasped new Artisan bridge

Enugu State council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists,NUJ, has called on the federal government to expedite action on the reconstruction of the collasped new Artisan bridge to ease the sufferings road users pass through in the state capital as a result of road diversion.

The Union also called on the  Government to beef up security in the state by sending security personnel to the hinter lands to provide security to the People.

The Union made the call in a  6-point Communique signed by the Secretary of State the council, Comrade Ifeoma Amuta and made available to the to newsmem.at the end of it’s September,2023  congress. held at the Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi Press  Centre, Enugu.

The Congress Chaired by Comrade Sam Udekwe after extensive discussion on welfare of Journalists,progress of the union and state of the State came up with these resolutions:

1. The council calls on relevant authorities to ensure that Newspaper Houses in the state are not shutdown .

2.The Congress emphasised the sanctity of its authority as the highest decision making organ for the Council and shall not yield the power to any influence from other authorities, stressing that the Constitution of the NUJ should be strictly adhered to.

3.The Congress calls on the federal government to expedite action on the reconstruction of the collapsed bridge at New Artisan, Enugu/PortHarcourt Expressway, while also appealing to the committee set up by the Enugu State Government to take proactive measures to forestall similar occurrences.

4. The council appeals to the state government to increase the presence of security agents in the hinterlands due to the rate of kidnappings in those areas.

5. It also urges the state government and other relevant authorities to address the anomalies seen in most traffic lights in Enugu metropolis, to ensure smooth vehicular and pedestrian movements.

6.The council  wants a holistic approach to be taken towards the prevention of  accidents in the state, by directing truck users to desist from plying major roads in the daytime, except as allowed as an interim measure to address the issue of the collapsed New Artisan bridge.
