Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) College of Medicine,Enugu, Tuesday,held the oath-taking/ induction of 52 newly trained medical Doctors with a charge on them to be committed to the oath they took, bearing in mind that the oath is a commitment to God and human beings.

Enugu state Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah gave the charge at the12Th oath-taking /induction ceremony ,Batch B, of the College, held at the College auditorium,ESUTH Parklane, Enugu.
Represented by the Deputy Governor, Ifeanyi Ossai, the Governor also urged the Doctors to uphold the ethics of the profession, do the right things and endeavour not to compromise.”You must endeavour not to comprise . Your oath is a commitment to God. Ignore people who want to throw their weight on you. Do the right thing . That’s how to make the society work. You must not let quest for money engulf you,” he said.
The Governor promised that his administration will do whatever that it will take to tackle the challenges at the College,saying that in no distant time they will have WIFI in the teaching hospital as well as portable water supply at the College.

In his speech, the Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Dr. Tab A. Sanusi, thanked Enugu state government for allocating a space for the Zonal office of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria in Enugu . He appealed for additional space .
Sanusi also thanked the University management for its efforts in seeing that the quota of students allowed to be admitted into the College increased from 50 to 120 per session.. He said that it can be increased to 150 if the College kept doing well.
The registrar appealed to the state government for more interventions to the University Teaching Hospital, noting that the issue is not passing the accreditation of the National University Commission (NUC) but with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria

He announced the Federal Government’s increase of the College’s capacity for housemanship from 50 to 150.
Sanusi urged the inductees to give back to Enugu state and ESUT which invested so much on them. Advising the inductees on medical practices, the Registrar urged them not to place money or take to get rich quick syndrome , rather, they should perform their duties with honesty and integrity,.
“Be compassionate and work as responsible medical officers because the ultimate care of the patients are in your care.It is in your name that the patients were admitted”, he said

The Registrar urged the Doctors to shun dubious means of getting rich, saying, “There is something I want to tell you about jappa, if it’s money you are looking for, you are in a wrong profession. If it’s money, I will just advise you to go to market and open a store there,” he said.
Sanusi assured them that they will make money and be comfortable, once they practise with integrity.
On the commencement of the School of Post graduate studies at the College, the Registrar urged the University management to run programmes tailored to medicine; Clinical medicine , medical anatomy for Doctors, medical Biochemistry for Doctors and Pharmacology. He said that the lecturers should also be from the medical profession.
The inductees
In his welcome address, the Provost of the ESUT College of Medicine, Prof. Frank Ezeugwu, said that the first graduation of Medical students of the College of Medicine was in 2010 and since then , they had graduated Doctors every year and this year’s induction marks the 12th batch of the medical graduates.
“The College has attained and maintained a high level of academic standard with zero tolerance to academic fraud, financial or sexual harassment and exploitation of students in other forms”, he said .
The Provost said that the great heights attained by the College were not without challenges. He mentioned infrastructure, staff welfare, students’welfare, electricity supply, WIFI, lack of operational vehicles as some of the problems facing the College.
“There is an intense congestion in the College premises now , which started as one faculty but has metamorphosed into three faculties.
“The 4Th statutory faculty with most of the constituent programmes which had received relevant approvals for their establishment is yet to take off because of lack of space,” Ezeugwu, said.
The provost disclosed that the qouta for training of medical Doctors at the College, was notionally approved to 150 but temporary allowed 120 because of the need to have some structures ,which included an all- purpose ,well equipped laboratory with modern facilities that can take in at least 100 students at once for laboratory work, training and research and increased staff strength.
He expressed the desire for the College to have an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) centre/ laboratory for the clinical evaluation of students and a Computer based test centre to help the College to continue to maintain the sanctity of examination among others.
The provost disclosed that the University of destablished post graduate programmes in Pharmacology, Physiology, Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience and Biochemistry. ” The Postgraduate programme in Anatomy has produced two sets of Ph.D and three sets of MSC graduates, while the College has produced fourteen homegrown professors between 2012 and 2023.
He added that three lecturers in the College and produced parents that are in use by relevant professional bodies.
Earlier, Chairman of the occasion and former Vice Chancellor of ESUT, Prof. Cyprain Onyeji, congratulated the Doctors and urged them to show empathy, give the patents hope , noting that hope is another medication.
“Don’t make money your priority, make a good name , remember your Alma -mater., remember your parents and guardians, make them proud from your actions. God will prosper you in all you do, “Onyeji said.

In his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of ESUT, Prof. Alloysius Okorie announced that the Convocat6ion of the University will be held in November,2023.
He highlighted some of the achievements of his administration , including renovation of four faculties, installation of WIFI at Agbani campus . He promised to do the same at ESUTH
The Vice -Chancellor thanked the inductees’ parents and guardians for their patnership and appealed for more promising that all the bottle necks would be removed.
He congratulated the inductees and apologized to them to forgive the management of the University for any thing done to them that made them uncomfortable while in the College.
