NUJ commends Enugu Govt, urges improved security, establishment of Disabilities Commission

Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Enugu State Council, has commended  Enugu state Government for the massive infrastructural development being executed across the state, urging contractors handling those projects to complete them before the rains set in.

The Council urged the State Government to consider the plight of the residents when demolishing structures and inform them before they build in such places to avoid waste of resources. 

These were contained in a 9-Point communique issued at the end of the February,2024 Congress presided over by the State Chairman , Comrade Sam Udekwe on Thursday, February 29, at the Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi NUJ Press Center, Enugu.

The Council appealed to the State Government to regularly pay pensions and gratuities to the retired State workers, to enable them to meet their financial needs.

It commended the state government for paying additional money(Wage Award)to workers of the state and appeals to the state government to review the salaries of the workers in line with the expected national minimum wage when concluded.

The Council urged the  State Government to look into the plight of the persons living  with disabilities by setting up the Disabilities Commission contained in the recently passed Disabilities Law in Enugu State.

The Council also urged  the State government to beef up security in the metropolis, especially in Independence Layout.

The Communique e-signed and made available to newsmen by the Councîl’s Secretary, Dame Ifeoma Amuta,  expresses concern over the worsening traffic gridlock and illegal motor parks springing up in the metropolis and asks those in charge to urgently address the issues.

The Congress commended the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Enugu State Council for the financial welfare package that has greatly assisted any member facing one difficulty or the other. 

It also  commended  the  journalists in Enugu State for maintaining their role as the voice of the voiceless in the state.

The text:

The monthly Congress presided over by the chairman, Comrade Sam Udekwe, has a critical look at some prevailing issues affecting the Council in particular, and the state in general, and resolves as follows:

1. The Congress commends the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Enugu State Council for the financial welfare package that has greatly assisted any member facing one difficulty or the other. 

2. The Congress appeals to the Enugu State government to regularly pay pensions and gratuities to the retired State workers, to enable them to meet their financial needs.
