In it’s determination to transform the health sector in the state, Enugu state Government has trained not fewer than 28 health personnel in Leadership and Management skills at the University of Washington, USA. .
Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Yomi Jaye disclosed that on Wednesday in Government House,Enugu, when he presented the graduates of the Leadership Course to the State Governor ,Dr Peter Mbah.
“We are here today to present the men and women who had attended the program according to His Excellency’s plans to increase c capacity in our health system . So, he deemed it fit to approve that they be trained in Leadershi
According to him, majority of the students performed well. He added that the program was a detailed practical and theoretical lectures and it had impacted largely on what they were doing over the month
He further inform the Governor that , the participants performed well and the University issued them Certificates in Leadership and Management specifically in the Health sector.
Dr Jaye added that the participants were selected from the Colleges of Nursing , College of Medicine and younger Doctors and Nurses so that they could have a blend .
He said they had a site coordinator and she was commended for managing the team effectively, irrespective of their ages and caliber of the profession
Dr Jaye noted that the program will change the mindset of the teachers in the schools because “the students depend on the quality of what we have inside us’.

On the importance of the training programme, the Special Adviser said the state Government realized that building structures, building facilities were not enough, rather, capacity building will enhance sustainability of the health sector, hence, the Governor’s approval for the Leadership and management program.
He explained that the Governor doesn’t want to come in few years and see that all the health sectors he has built have been reversed and that ‘s why they decided that as they built the College of Nursing, College of Medicine , that the people that will train these Caregivers will have a massive mindset change.
” So, we decided to enroll them in University of Washington in three months thorough Course in Leadership and Management. What they had gotten now included healthcare leadership and management and we are going to see a lot of experiences in healthcare management,healthcare leadership.
“We are building 260 Primary Healthcare Centres, we are building an International hospital and we need to train people who are going to be there and that’s what we have just done”, Dr Jaye said.
He disclosed that the program will be a continuous one. on the benefits of the program, he said the beneficiaries saw a different approach to leadership and management and they will take it down to the younger ones
The Special Adviser on health commended the state Governor for investing in both infrastructure and human capital development in the Health sector which according to him , would improve healthcare delivery.
In his remarks, the state Governor, Dr Peter Mbah who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government Prof Chidiebere Onyia , recalled that upon resumption of office he set a clear road map of his transformative agenda in the health sector which includes irreversibility and improved capacity of institutions.
He congratulated the beneficiaries for the successful completion of the 3 months intensive training.
The Governor emphasized the need for effective transfer of Leadership and Management skills to the younger generation.
In an interview, the site Coordinator for the training program, Nurse Chinaza Akpa commended the State Governor for sponsoring .She said the impact of the training was already reflecting in the dynamic and flexibility of their thoughts as regards to managing the Health sector.

A Participant, Prof .Uchenna Ugochi thanked Governor Mbah for sponsoring them for the training. He said it was a 3-month intensive and impactful training.

On his part, the Chairman of Nkanu West Local Government Area, John Igbodo, commended the state Governor for the sponsorship for the training. He said the impact of the training ,the experience, and knowledge acquired will go a long way to impact positively in his management skills
