A University Don and a Professor of Economics at the University of Nigeria , Nsukka, Osiita Ogbu, has called for institution of Chartered Journalists to distinguish core professional Journalists from non serious ones.
He made the call during his lecture on “Journalism in a developing Economy:the dignity of Professional Practice”, he delivered during the second day of the NUJ Enugu State Council’s Press Week held on Monday, at the Rt. Hon. Dr Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi Unity Hall, Press center, Enugu
,Professor Ogbu who was a former Economic Adviser to an ex Nigerian president, urged Journalists to exhibit integrity, attitudinal change and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
He explained that Journalism was not an all comers affair and practitioners must imbibe reading culture,be knowledgeable, and develope themselves,dress well as well as serve public interest through shaping public discourse
Professor Ogbu said the role of Journalists are to interface and act as intermediary between the government and the governed as well as shape the society for the better.
Describing Journalism as a noble profession ,Prof Ogbu advised Journalists to engage in constant search for knowledge to distinguish them from quacks.
He commended the organizers of the Press Week and the choice of the topic and hoped for internalization of knowledge derived from the lecture.
The lecture featured question and answer session.
Earlier in a remark, the Chairman of the State Council, Comrade Sam Udekwe explained that the Press week was an annual event meant to bring members together to explore ways of improving on their profession and sharing conviviality as well as honouring those who distinguished themselves in their fields of endeavor.
Two distinguished personalities were honoured with the awards of Icon of Democracy on Dr.Chidi Obetta , House of Representatives Member Representing Nsukka /Igboeze South Federal Const
Also honoured was the Afriinvest .
The Secretary of the Press Week Committee, Comrade Ignatius Okpara in a Vote of thanks appreciated the guest lecturer, the award recipients amd
members for attending the invent.
He announced that the Grand finale of the Press Week comes up on Friday 6th December at the same venue by noon.
