64Th Independence: Clergy charges leaders on inclusive governance, lauds Gov Mbah’s leadership style

Diocesan Chancellor and  Secretary, Catholic Diocese of Enugu , Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Wilfred Agubuchie has admonished Leaders at all levels to run an inclusive government and work for common good of all, practicing the ‘”principle of ubuntu’.

He made the call in his homily delivered at the Holy Mass organised by the Enugu State Government  on Sunday ,29Th September ,2024 , at the Government House Chapel in  commemoration of  the Nigeria’s 64Th Independence  anniversary coming up on October 1st.

Drawing his sermon from the  First Reading, Numbers1:25-28, Second reading ,James 5: 1-6 and Gospel Mark 9: 38-43,46,47-48, Very Rev. Fr.Dr. Agubuchie said, from the thrust of the sermon, and as Jesus Christ said, ” He who is not against us is for us, they got the Theme of the sermon which was, ” Work for the common good”, meaning, ” any Christian, any Government, any Leader  who will really achieve the mandate of Jesus Christ must be all inclusive, must have that oneness and unity of mind and purpose, excluding no one, excluding no section, excluding no people, no race in his administration, in his work and rest of them and that person must think in community, not personal, for the community .

He said, ” common good is that which will deliver Nigeria.’ The priest went further to say that ,” Any leader who succeeds in  ruling Nigeria to success must put common good at the forefront.and it’s such that thinking of common good, it will be well with everybody, it will be well with the rich and also well with the poor and for the middle class. So, I wish that we all work together. I am because we are , that’s,Ubuntu principle.

On the good governance in the state,  Very Rev Fr Dr. Agubuchie said ” talking good governance in the state , when we look at Enugu state, all the projects going on in Enugu, we are motivated by common good.

“Talk about  the Smart schools, the taxations, these things are things that are keeping everybody together, both the rich, the poor, but bringing people at the middle and together.Likewise, in Smart schools, not only the children of the rich gain education and growth ,but also the children of the poor.

“Even these dilapidated International conference center and Presidential hotel that were being rehabilitated. All of them are keeping the common good ,so that everybody will enjoy these projects together.

In an interview on his message to Nigerians, , Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah ,said , Nigerians should be grateful as a nation, as a people. 

” In less than 48hours, we will be celebrating 64 years as a nation , which is a testament of our resilient as a people. It’s a reminder that democracy is not an exclusive preserve. That society strive  when government nurture a set of emotion.and  also banishes a  feeling of segregation.. That for us as a nation to be united  , to have an inclusive economic development. That’s where the economy, this country is headed to.. It’s for us as citizens to support the leaders, a the president and the leadership we have in the state .

On his assessment of Nigeria at 64 year Governor said, “We are making steady progress.  We may be making a piece meal progress , perhaps, what we need to review now is whether the marginal or incremental progress we are making is enough or whether we should obviously, think about ways  that we can deploy disruptive innovation to lift up some of the developmental challenges we  are having.”, he said.

 Speaking with newsmen, the Speaker, Enugu state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uche Ugwu said , the message the leaders have for the people “is the message of hope. The leaders should continue to strive  and the followers corporate. There will be synergy .
