National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has condemned the attack on Edema Elohor Jennifer, a corps member, by operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group in Oba, Anambra State, describing it as “unacceptable”.It said everything would be done to ensure those who perpetrated the act “are brought to justice”.
It was gathered that the operatives broke into a Corps Lodge, claiming it was being used for illegal activities.
In a video that has gone viral, they “physically assaulted the female Corps Member Jennifer, who was only on a visit to the lodge.”
In a statement on Tuesday, the NYSC management emphasised its dedication to the safety of corps members.
The statement: reads: “Management wishes to restate its strong commitment to the welfare and security of Corps Members nationwide and would not condone any individual or group undermining their safety for whatsoever reason.”
The NYSC has formally reported the incident to the police, and an investigation is underway to ensure the culprits are punished.
“The matter has since been formally reported to the police, and investigations are currently ongoing to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book,” the statement read.
The NYSC therefore appealed to the public and host communities to protect corps members,
“Members of the public are enjoined to provide adequate security for Corps Members in their places of primary assignment and host communities.”
The NYSC management reiterated that it will not tolerate any form of “intimidation, harassment or abuse against corps members”.
