The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has urged Enugu State Government to establish a taskforce that would checkmate negative activities of scavengers popularly known as ‘iron condemn’.
This is contained in a communiqué issued on Friday by the NUJ Enugu State Council at the end of its Congress held on Sept. 26 in Enugu, which was presided by Chairman of NUJ Enugu State, Comrade Sam Udekwe.
It noted that there was a need to checkmate negative activities/operations of scavengers because of the nuisance they constitute in Enugu metropolis especially stealing people’s valuables in the name of scavenging.
The communiqué decried the high electricity tariff being charged Enugu residents who had been classified into Band A and other bands.
The Communique signed by the Council chairman Comrade Sam Udekwe and made available to newsmen by the Secretary, Comrade Ifeoma Amuta. The Communique read in parts:
“NUJ calls on the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to declassify some areas from Band A because of the high tariff, especially residential areas.
“Congress further advises EEDC to ensure it supplies power commensurate with the high tariff that accompany Band A grading.
“Congress commends Gov. Mbah for the giant developmental projects he has been embarking on in the state, especially the provision of potable pipe borne water.
“Congress, however, ask the governor to extend the reticulation of the pipe borne water to some other areas hitherto unreached like Garriki and others within Enugu metropolis,” it said.
