Nigeria Customs Service has mourned the death of a Deputy Controller of Customs, Etop Essien, who died on Tuesday at the National Assembly while answering questions from members of the House of Representatives Committee on Public Account when he coughed and slumped. Until his death, Essien was the DCC in charge of revenue.
The NCS in a statement by its spokesman, Abdullahi Maiwada, said Essien who hailed from Akwa Ibom State, was known for his diligence and exceptional service record in the accounts unit.
“He was known for his diligence and exceptional service record in the Accounts Unit. His role as DC Revenue was pivotal in ensuring the accurate reconciliation of revenue, which he performed with utmost precision and dedication,” the statement read.
“During his presentation (before the house committee), approximately three minutes in, Deputy Comptroller Essien requested water and showed signs of discomfort. Despite immediate efforts to assist him, he unfortunately passed away.”
On his part, the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, said the service will support the family of the deceased.
He also extended their heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased on behalf of the entire officers and men of the service .
