Enugu Gov’s wife inaugurates 7- member Board for Social Protection, Welfare Shelters of Enugu State

Worried about the activities of some Caregivers  in some Orphanage homes in the state,(both public and private) and with a desire to rehabilitate the homes and raise the standards to an enviable height, wife of Enugu state Governor , Mrs Nkechinyere Mbah, Tuesday, June 18, inaugurated a new Board for Social Protection and Welfare Shelters of Enugu State in her office ,with the Vice Chancellor  of Godfrey Okoye University, Rev Fr Prof. Christian Anieke as the Chairman.

Inaugurating the Board, Mrs Mbah decried poor state of the homes She described  the activities of some Caregivers as embarrassing, disclosing that some Caregivers have formed the habit of carting away the food items brought for the feeding of the children.

She said, “it’s very obvious what people are doing there  People are not just there because of the children, taking away food brought for the children. I want things like these to stop.

She said the aim of inaugurating a new Board was for the Board  to oversee the activities of the homes and  bring them to enviable heights, ensuring that the children in those homes receive proper care and treatment. 

” What I need is rehabilitation from  the  current state to  an enviable state that we will be proud of . I had visited some homes. It’s something else. It’s embarrassing . There is a budget for the homes, yet the children are suffering and that is why I need you people. I can’t do it alone.  I felt that there should be a Board to oversee all the homes in Enugu. Let  them come under one umbrella,” she said.

She mentioned some of the orphanage homes to include FSP, TAMAR-SARC, Welfare centre, Rehabilitation centre among others.

The Governor’s wife expressed satisfaction with the calibre of people selected as members of the Board and charged them  on  diligence and commitment.

Other members of the Board are Rev’d Canon Chibuike Okolo – Vice chairman, Barr Uzoamaka Okeji – Secretary, Rev Sister Gloria Iloka – member, Rev Sister Felitas Onyemelukwe – member, Pastor Elias Okonkwo- member, and Anna Igbokwe – member.

In an acceptance speech  presented on behalf of other members, the Board  chairman, Rev Fr Prof. Christian Anieke  thanked the Governor’s wife for choosing them to serve.

“This appointment is without any form of politicking, rather,  it is based on Her Excellency ‘s commitment to this project and her belief in our ability to give our time and ideas to ensure the success  of this project. We know that this project is about children and vulnerable members of our beloved state .

“Being men and women of test and  integrity, we know how  important this project is. It is with deep expression of faith in God and service to humanity . I assure you Her Excellency that this board will deliver. All of us here are committed to the success of Enugu state ,which God has placed  in the hands of our beloved Governor. We will not fail in our duty. It will be our job to contribute to the realization  of the tomorrow which is already here “, the Clergy said.
